The fourth international WORK2019 Conference gathered experts in work and working life to Helsinki between 14.\u201316. of August. Conference\u00a0highlights, 14.8.:\u00a0Innovations can increase labour market inequality<\/strong><\/p>\n On the opening day of the conference, discussions revolved around the effects of the platform economy on work.\u00a0During the day we heard a keynote speech\u00a0on\u00a0the downside of innovation work by\u00a0Associate Professor of Communication Lilly Irani<\/strong> from the University of California, San Diego, and another keynote on\u00a0the online gig economy by Associate Professor\u00a0Vili Lehdonvirta<\/strong> from Oxford University.<\/p>\n Read more about the highlights of Wednesday<\/a><\/p>\n Conference highlights, 15.8.:\u00a0Automation makes work more efficient but can constrain employees<\/strong><\/p>\n Thursday\u00a0featured presentations on work automation and its links to employees\u2019 rights and privacy.\u00a0Professor of Labour Law Valerio De Stefano<\/strong> from KU Leuven delivered a keynote speech on the effects of artificial intelligence and automation to employees’ rights and labour law.\u00a0Professor of Sociology Allison Pugh<\/strong> from the University of Virginia talked about the future of relationship-dependent work as a result of digitalisation.\u00a0Professor of Anthropology Ilana Gershon<\/strong> from Indiana University\u00a0delved into the branding of the individual in working life in her speech.<\/p>\n Read more about the highlights of Thursday<\/a><\/p>\n Conference highlights,\u00a016.8.:\u00a0The platform economy can save or destroy a business\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The WORK2019 conference culminated on Friday in the closing seminar of the SWiPE (Smart Work in Platform Economy<\/em>)\u00a0consortium\u00a0which is funded by the Strategic Research Council at the Academy of Finland. The keynote speech of the day was delivered by\u00a0Professor Martin Kenney <\/strong>from the University of California. The keynote covered the theme of platform actors’ power over businesses.
